Garmin and Magellan both use the same map data provider, NAVTEQ. However, Garmin updates their maps much more often. They sell map updates every year for their GPS receivers. Magellan, on the other hand, only sells updated maps every 2-3 years.

well, i've got a tomtom 720 go and i got to say it's brilliant, the updates are spot on and it spots all speed cameras and gives subscribed traffic reports plus the tomtom is very easy to use!
i had to drive from wales to london and it spotted all the cameras! did'nt miss one! even the ones they moved because of motorway work!
i cant give an opinion for the garmin devices as i've never had one but i would stick to what you know is best - [tomtom] lol
hope this helps?

I lean toward the Garmin, but it's based on having used them before, and liking the way it works for me.
I'd recommend reading the following page from AOPA, and thinking about how you would use one...http://www.aopa.org/pilot/gps.html

you can search for POI (points of interest) files, ie. Harley, Starbucks, Target etc. and install them. The newest maps are 2008 that came out a couple months ago, and are a lot More accurate than V7 or V8 maps your unit came with. Garmin will send you the latest maps if you just bought it and it has older maps installed on it, and they will send the DVD with new maps at no charge. If you've had it a while and want to upgrade the maps they are $75. You can get the latest upgrades and patches etc. at mygarmin.com just register your unit and download the update software and your set. The c330is a great unit, I have had the c320 for about 3 years and I can't find a new one I like enough to spend the money upgrading, the Garmin navigates great and the interface is so easy to use I just keep using it and getting everywhere I want to go. Enjoy and good luck.

If you are going to use it to supplement your navigation VFR,
spend the bucks and get at the very least, the Garmin GPSMAP196, the '96 has a screen about as big as the one on a typical cell phone,( Display size, 1.5"W x 2.2"H ) not much good in the cockpit if you ask me (and you did!) The 196 is good in the air, land, and on the road w/turn /turn directions. I Dont go any where with out mine .even tho I have the 396 as well and plan on upgrading to the 496 with XM weather soon!
