Gps — Garmin Or Tomtom?

I’m in need of a GPS system because I’m new to driving and don’t know my way around. With that said, I’m in the market for a GPS [obviously] but I’ve read and heard mixed reviews of the Garmin and TomTom devices. From the countless reviews that I’ve read, Garmin is the superior device, because by many accounts, TomTom’s updates and maps are terrible. What are your experiences with these two brands?

If I Purchase A Tomtom Gps That Come With Mapshare, Do I Ever Have To Purchase A Map Upgrade?

I can not seem to find this answer anywhere.
I know with garmin and Magellan you have to pay for map updates.
Is it that you have to pay for updates with TomTom and then the mapshare makes minor corrections from users?
Can You Get The Garmin Or Tomtom Gps’s To Repeat A Voice Prompt In Case You Missed It?

I just booted a Nuvi 350 and entered a street route into it. You can get it to repeat directions by tapping on the ‘turn in” tab in the lower right corner of the screen. The voice prompt will repeat the spoken directions for the next turn. You can also tap on the next maneuver bar (in green) on the top of the screen to get the unit to display the agenda (all the future turns, how far away they are, the description of the maneuver) at any time.

Here is a website called Trapster, where users inform each other where the speed traps are, in cities around the world. Oh, and it’s totally free by the way. It works with phones, and also works with Garmin and TomTom GPS units. Here’s Trapster on a YouTube video.
